What is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)?

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics explains it simply: all registered dietitians are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are registered dietitians. This difference can be very important for your health.

A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) is a trained healthcare professional who must meet strict requirements:

  • Earn a degree in a nutrition-related field from an accredited university.
  • Complete at least 1200 hours of supervised, hands-on training.
  • Pass a national board exam.
  • Complete ongoing education every year to stay up to date.

In Texas, RDNs are also licensed by a state board and can use the title Licensed Dietitian (LD).The title "nutritionist" is not regulated and can be used by anyone, even those with only personal experience or informal training. RDNs, however, are experts in nutrition therapy for diseases and understanding how the body uses nutrients and energy.

Before following any nutrition advice, make sure to check the person's qualifications.

Will My Insurance Cover Your Services, and How Many Appointments Will I Need?

We’re in-network with most major insurance providers, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, United Healthcare, Tricare/TriWest, Curative, Sana, and more. Most plans cover nutrition therapy for medical conditions diagnosed by a doctor. While referrals are rarely required, we recommend checking with your insurance provider to confirm your coverage.

As a courtesy, we’ll verify your benefits and file claims on your behalf. Final out-of-pocket costs are determined by your insurance after the claim is processed. If you have any questions, we’re happy to help.

Many clients see results in just 2–3 sessions. For more complex needs or long-term goals, your RDN will customize a plan during your first visit.
